Is this how you get high def with a antenna on a hdtv?

the coax plugs into the tuner then the tuner decodes the signal and turns it into high def?

Usually, you plug the antenna into the tv. And if the tv has an internal tuner, you run it's scan for over the air channels, instructions are in your owners manual. Then it will pick up all the OTA signals it can and the ones which are HD will be HD, the others will be SD.

You need to be tuned into a hi def channel, normally on satellite but there are a few on digital terrestrial.
